Teaching and Leadership
Teaching
Often times, trainees completing the Pain Research Fellowship find employment in an academic setting or the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, the program gives trainees the opportunity to develop effective teaching skills. Presentations during journal club and work-in-progress meetings offer a chance to refine verbal skills and receive feedback. Trainees also deliver at least one lecture in the Mechanisms of Pain Transmission course as well as assist in examination development, grading, and the leading of discussions.
Additional resources are available for trainees wishing to improve teaching skills through the Carver College of Medicine Office of Consultation and Research in Medical Education.
Leadership and Management
The University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research has developed programs utilized by the Pain Research Program to assist with:
- Management of staff
- Budgeting
- Other responsibilities related to managing grants or contracts
Monthly 'research survival skills' seminars are also available on a monthly basis, which cover several areas related to a career in research including writing grants, funding searches and intellectual property.
